Service Description

*  provides enhanced services/supports for school-age newcomer children, youth and families for the first 12-18 months of arriving in Winnipeg, as a way of increasing integration into their new school and community
* has SWIS staff work in partnership with school staff, service providers to deliver additional supports to recently arrived newcomer children and youth; SWIS staff ensure that individuals are connected to existing resources to increase the overall wellbeing of each family
* includes the following components:
  • Orientation Workshops for Newcomers (OWN)
  • One-to-One and Group Orientation Activities that cover many topics
  • Pro-social skill development and wellness programming
  • Needs / Assets / Assessment / Referrals followed by a Settlement Plan (NAARS)
  • Enhanced NAARS and Settlement Plans for those with more complex needs
  • After school homework support for newcomer and refugee children and youth
  • referrals for participants to community resources
* offers remote programs to newcomer children and youth including: English Language club, French Language Club, One-on-one homework clu and We thrive group (see separate programs for specifics)
